In the UK the Motor Insurers Information Centre (MIIC) was established by the insurance industry in 2000, to develop and manage the Motor Insurance Database (MID). The intention was that it should help reduce the burden of uninsured drivers on insured drivers premiums, estimated at £15-£30 per person. Since January 2003, it is required that motor trade policyholders provide the MID with details of the registration numbers of all vehicles that they own and any vehicles in their possession that will be driven, used or parked on a road or public place.
The following vehicles need to be notified:
All taxed vehicles used on the road. The only exception to this is where a vehicle is not held for more than 14 days. As soon as it becomes likely that the vehicle will be kept for more than 14 days, it must be notified.
The 14-day period starts from the day upon which the vehicle comes into the custody or control of the motor trader. Where there is no intention of using a taxed vehicle on the road or public place there is no need to mention it. If there is any possibility of it being used on the road or public place the vehicle must be notified within 14 days of coming into the trader's custody or control.
To comply with the regulation you will need to supply the following information to your insurer:
- Registration number for vehicles owned by you and covered on your motor trade policy.
- Courtesy loan vehicles registration numbers owned by the motor trader for the purpose of customer use. (The use of such vehicles by the customer is not covered under this policy).
- Trade Plates.
- Date the vehicle was bought or sold.
- Details of any non standard modifications.
It remains your responsibility to notify all vehicles as detailed above. This legislation will carry penalties, which will be in the form of fines. From now on you must tell your insurance company when you buy a relevant vehicle or when you sell a vehicle already notified to us.
If you require it you can obtain further information from the MIIC website www.miic.org.uk.
